Oats are an important source of
soluble and insoluble fibre

b-glycans are soluble fibres which contribute to the maintenance or regular blood cholesterol levels.

* Oat beta-glucan has been shown to lower/reduce blood cholesterol. High cholesterol is a risk factor in the development of coronary heart disease. The beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 3 g of oat beta-glucan. Oats contain more high nutritional
value proteins than any other cereal.
One 40g serving contains 4.4g of protein, representing the highest protein content amongst the cereals consumed in Greece. The quality of oats proteins, evaluated based on Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score (PD-CAAS), is higher compared to other wholegrain cereal. The PD-CAAS index is 69% while for corn, wheat, rice and barley the index is 45, 45, 67 and 68% respectively.
Oats are a source of vitamins
of the B complex.
They contain vitamin B1 (thiamine), vitamin B2 (riboflavin), vitamin B6 and folic acid. It is the cereal with the highest content in thiamine, providing approximately 19% of the recommended daily intake.
Oats have the highest zinc content compared to other cereals often consumed in Greece (corn, wheat and rice). A 40g serving contains almost 10% of the recommended daily intake.
Oats are a source of antioxidant ingredients such as vitamin E, selenium, several phenolic compounds and, of course, avenanthramides, an antioxidant unique to oats.
Amongst the most commonly consumed cereals in Greece, oats are one of the cereals with the highest content of unsaturated fats (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated).
